| ..its all about ‘connecting’ |
 |
The first one had to be a painting with a beach setting. Since my
paintings are a combination of ‘scape’ and ‘the figurative’the scape
element had to be the element that serves as the starting point for all
‘scapes’ and that means one that is the least complicated and simplest
expressions of nature and that means folks it HAD to be a BEACH.

Because it doesn’t have mountains, streams, trees, cottages, roads,
electric poles, fences and so on we can focus on mixing a color to
a value and then applying that to the surface. And that folks is
very very important to learn first up-more important in fact than
anything else because it takes us directly into the challenge of what
painting is-MIXING and APPLYING. It also brings us face to face with a
couple of the scientific aspects of painting-the ILLUSION of DISTANCE
and the POWER of a LIMITED PALETTE. The second stage of each DVD is
painting in the figures.
| ..getting the story right’ |
 |
This first DVD is called ‘Billy and Buddy at the Beach’. After the
‘beach-scape’ is painted the second stage goes into actually painting
in the storyline figures-a dog, seagulls, a bucket and a fishing boy.

Now I must warn you that to do this properly and show ‘everything’
I worked efficiently and loosely without getting to precious about
anything. And it worked but I must let you know the DVD is fully
loaded with me talking and painting for 140 minutes flat-out.

On top of the technical part I talk to you about the psychology
of connecting to the passerby-something just about all artists
give little thought to! If a painting fails to connect what’s
the point of it. It’s like having a Clayton’s beer –a beer without
alcohol, is well…. no beer at all! Or it’s a bit like having
sex with yourself, if you know what I mean.. it doesn’t sort of
go anywhere in a community sense! So we need to talk about this…
how to ‘pitch the painting’ to the public.

I remember a few years back in Sydney I gave a 2 day seminar to a
couple of hundred aspiring and practicing artists about painting in
general. It was packed out and so I sort of turned it on and strutted
my stuff and carried on doing a few paintings and generally talking
about art from my little perspective.

all there’ |

At the end of the 2 days the big complaint was) a) but you didn’t tell us
why you paint what you do (= psychology of connecting) and b) how do make it
all work so you can live by it (= economic model). This first DVD answers
the first question as well as showing you the process. The economic model
part is contained in my new book ‘Absolutely Everything…..Before You Die’.

Additionally ‘Billy and Buddy at the Beach’ DVD is explained in the
book as the first demonstration so if there is something you missed
in the DVD you can pick it up in the book and vice versa.
